sabrinaThe first time I saw the McCarren Park Pool was for Agora in September 2005. I was totally struck by the immensity of the space. It felt kind of magical to see the performance within this artifact of brooklyn.

It was so fun to come back to this space for the concerts in the summer of 2006. I remember sitting on the bottom of the pool listening to Deerhoof and eating Ben&Jerry’s cookies and cream ice cream. I’m ready for more pool parties this year!

rozzI remember when a friend of mine who grew up in Williamsburg told me some of the history of the pool and how swimming in it was basically off limits to brown and Black folk like myself. Integrating the pool is apparently what ending up shutting it down (although there are ostensibly some “health code” reasons that are often usually cited). It’s so interesting to see the use of it now.

This is an amazing space and it’s true that fears of integration did have a lot to do with shutting it down. Now that there are millions of dollars earmarked to renovate the pool it will be very interesting to see how things unfold. The community has to get involved otherwise it might go the way of becoming solely a Live Nation concert venue. We need more public space I think you all will agree so we’ve got to keep an eye on how this develops!
